WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2025

End Plastic Pollution Globally

This year’s focus is on the impact of plastic waste. The goal is to encourage people, governments, and organisations to rethink their relationship with plastic and adopt sustainable practices. Here are some of our best practices.

#1 Skip plastic in your wardrobe

Synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon shed up to 700,000 microplastic fibers per wash, which flow into rivers, oceans, and even drinking water. Choosing natural fibers like organic cotton, hemp, or linen can reduce this pollution dramatically.

On a global scale, synthetic textiles contribute to 35% of microplastics in the ocean.

#3 Repair before replacing

Whether it’s shoes, bags, or electronics, find local repair shops and extend product lifespans. This slows demand for virgin plastic and cuts down on e-waste and synthetic material waste.

Repairing an item instead of replacing it can cut associated plastic waste by up to 90% and halve its total environmental footprint.

#4 Buy plastic-free

Swap to cut down plastic waste from your daily routine. Use plastic-free versions of household products: shampoo, soap, conditioner, cleaning products, tea bags, razors, wipes.

A few swaps can prevent 15+ plastic bottles per person per year, reducing household waste by up to 5 kg annually.

#5 Adopt sustainable habits

Switch to reusable items and say no to single-use plastics. Every small choice—like using a metal straw or cloth bag—makes a difference.

Replacing single-use items with reusables (bottle, straw, bag, cup) can save an individual up to 2,000 plastic items per year.

#6 Track your plastic for one week

Self-awareness is powerful. Keep a plastic diary for 7 days—you’ll spot hidden habits and see where you can cut down most.

People who track their plastic usage reduce it by an average of 25% in the following month. By becoming more aware of our plastic consumption habits, we can make more informed choices and actively reduce our plastic footprint.

#7 Educate and advocate

Use your voice to spread awareness. Talk with friends and family, and share what plastic-free options work for you.

Word of mouth is powerful: studies show 1 in 3 people who hear about sustainable habits from someone they trust are likely to adopt at least one.
