“I RELATE WELLNESS OR THE FEELING OF WELLBEING TO HAVING A STABLE AND CALM MIND.”

May 1st, 2022 by LO CARE

Beautiful artist and LO Circle muse Nina Davies is a painter and illustrator with whom we’ve collaborated multiple times over the past years. Nina and her mother Eefje starred in our Mother’s Day campaign, she created all our illustrations and for the second year in a row she designed our Mother’s Day gift card. Get to know Nina.

You followed your dream of becoming a full time painter. How did that come about?
From a young age I was introduced to art. I drew and painted a lot when I was little, actually I stopped making things after art school. Years later I started making things again. I come from a creative family with a grandfather who was a visual artist. Also my stepfather and father made art or worked in the design field. They inspired me to pursue this path.

Who or what inspires you?
Everyday life is inspiring to me, and that’s why I take pictures of friends & family and places I see everyday, which I use for reference for my own work.

From art school I remember that figurative paintings were sort of frowned upon, they’d be making it look like it was outdated. But female artists like Chloe Wise, Ania Hobson and Vanessa Garwood who I’ve been following for some years now, show me there is a place in this world for figurative (female) artists. Really inspiring.

What do you always keep on your nightstand?
A book

Reading right now
I read a lot of books at the same time, fiction and nonfiction. Now I’m reading Sweet Nothings by Marlene Dumas, The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai and Kapitalistisch Realisme by Mark Fischer.

Name three products can you not live without
Sketchbook, phone and sleeping eye mask.

Something you’ve given up for the environment
I used to eat a lot of meat and dairy products – I heavily cut down on those. Also I try to give ‘old’ clothes a new life by wearing mostly secondhand.

Your Favourite Tune

So many, I love eating

What’s always in your fridge?
Strawberries

What is your skincare philosophy?
I don’t have one, but I think drinking plenty of water, eating healthy and cleansing my skin twice a day already does a lot for my skin.

How do you start your day?
I get out of bed, grab my phone from the other room and quickly go back to bed to scroll through news websites. Then I make myself a cup of black coffee.

Do you have any morning rituals?
Not really, but I don’t go anywhere without drinking two cups of black coffee.

How do you end your day?
I read a book or the newspaper in bed.

Do you have any evening rituals?
Does cleaning my skin count as a ritual?

Do you have a favourite ritual?
I love working out a couple of times a week, I have a hometrainer bike and when I feel like leaving the house for a workout I go to reformer pilates or hot yoga.

Wellness Hack
For me I relate wellness or the feeling of wellbeing to having a ‘stable’ and calm mind. So I try not to get stressed by telling myself not to stress. Which is hard sometimes lol.
